So I'm a ricer...

Before I begin, have a 3G Prelude for reading:

Kinja'd!!!

Anyway, I’m a ricer and have one of those 5 panel wink mirrors on my car.

I couldn’t find a picture I have of it installed, so here’s a photo off the internet:

Kinja'd!!!

I actually really like the mirror; it provides excellent visibility and I think it looks cool. It’s also a nice conversation piece for passengers (especially those not really into cars). However, it had some slight to mild vibration while driving—nothing I couldn’t get used to but hey why not try to fix it, right?

...wrong.

I was doing some research on it and found that other people had issues with vibration and also where the mirror would sag/warp in the middle due to heat during the summer (windows rolled up, parked in the blazing hot sun). One guy got some 90* aluminum stock and ran it along the top and bottom of the mirror in the rear. He also made some custom mounts instead of using the ones the kit came with but his mounts are principally the same as the stock ones. Allegedly this fixed the vibration and the flex/sag. Allegedly.

I got tired of moping about my perpetual single-ness the other day and thought that maybe some light ‘wrenching’ would get my mind off things and cheer me up. Went to home depot, picked up some aluminum and JB-Weld and some time later arrived at this:

Kinja'd!!!

Installed it and took a drive and the vibration is like 2-3x worse. Before the ‘fix’, the vibration was there but perfectly tolerable and now when I hit a bump it looks like there’s a biblical earthquake happening on the road behind me. I JB-Welded the aluminum on there so it’s not really feasible to remove now.

Anyone have any advice on how to reduce the vibration? I don’t even care about eliminating it at this point, I just want less vibration. My next course of action is to buy some rubber washers and fit that between where the mount is affixed to the roof and also between the mirror and the mounts, but the internet has mixed reviews concerning the effectiveness of the rubber washers.

The S12 , right? Interesting cars, there was a guy at East Coast Bash absolutely ripping on one in the lower class. What are your plans for it?

This looks so good. I wouldn’t change a thing. Can we have the Prelude again Honda? Please?

from one ricer to another, have you considered adding a wing to the mirror to reduce shaking?

Weren’t those mirrors considered dangerous because they turn to flying ninja stars in an accident? Plus what do you do with your sun visors?

I haven’t heard of any such incidents but I guess it could be a possibility. It’s mounted with the same screws that the sun visors are mounted with so it isn’t likely to tear out of the roof and become a loose object. However, unexpected and crazier things have happened in accidents.

I never use my sun visors, so I had no problem removing them. I guess I just prefer squinting into the sun haha. There are ways to retain the sun visors however, see the installed photo from the internet in the post

You know, I hadn’t thought of that yet—I might give it a shot. Some creative rerouting of A/C ducts might even help with more downforce over the mirror wing...

S13 suspension swap, KA swap, upgraded 4 links, and then safety stuff.

I never really considered those mirrors rice. That being said, I don’t think I’ve seen one outside of a race car.

That should also increase downforce. Maybe add a cat-back to it too for +5 hp.

I know someone who was in a rollover crash in his Datsun 510. He was mostly fine (thanks cage!) minus cuts in his face and arms from his mirror shattering.

But your mirror is fully functional and serves an actual purpose for you. This isn’t rice at all.

Not hellaslammed (that much), no sponsorship style stickers, Tire sidewall thickness greater than 1 half inch, No giant needless tachometer, no roll cage despite never going to the track...

Car ricer rating: 1/10. You need to try harder if you want to be a real ricer. Consider stopping by Autozone and attaching some underbody lights while putting some ‘Greddy’ and ‘AMS’ stickers on the fender. That’ll get your ricer rating up to at least 5/10.

Well, those windshield stickers are pretty lame. + 1.5 to the ricer index.

If it’s actually a harmonic issue try mounting with plug nuts or other proper vibration isolators.

From your description of bouncing as you go over bumps though it sounds like it's not really a vibration issue just poor mounting so beef that up if you can. Though that would reduce adjustability to zero

Word, that sounds good. If I can get the mirror to a good position then I won’t mind sacrificing adjustability. It’s sort of harmonic as it oscillates for a little after the bumps but I think you’re right that it’s more of a mounting issue.

I just went out and got some rubber gasket sheets and I’m cutting them accordingly to pad the mounts and make some washers for where the mirror is attached to the mounts. Let’s see if that helps (I’m kinda skeptical that this will do the trick). If not, I’ll try to fab up some beefier mounts. Probably won’t be anything pretty but as long as it works, no?

All the stance/flush/vtak/y0 honda kids have them around here. I’m back home from college and my town is brimming with those cars so I actually see them somewhat regularly now.

1st gen CR-V. Not the average civic, but I’m pretty sure it’s much slower than one. I really want to do an auto to manual swap—I’d be content with a 5spd awd crv.

That sounds cool! Swaps have been done before? Also...you kept the spare tire on the back right? Lol the rice game is strong in my neck of the woods, Ive seen CR-Vs of all gens so low you’d think they were hatchbacks to begin with.

Kinja'd!!!1

Haha hell yeah I kept my spare tire on the back, I’d have it no other way.

Rice game is strong where I live, too and I’ve seen a couple slammed 1st gen crv’s around here as well. Honda actually sold the 1st and 2nd gen crv’s with manual transmissions as an option so the swap is relatively bolt in (but not as easy as a more common civic/integra). GSR/Type R transmissions also bolt up with a bit of creativity but I’d lose awd.
